Defining Hazards and Hazardous Situations

Hazard. A condition, set of circumstances or inherent property that can cause injury, illness or death.

Hazardous Situation - The context of the hazard that could include one or more of the following factors:

  • how a hazardous material is used, material (heated, compressed)

  • how a machine or piece of equipment is used

  • organizational factors that influence the hazard and can modify the level of risk. (excessive work pressure, fear, lack of training, lack of psychological safety)
